AMS Part 2: Take the Wheel Workshop

We are excited to share with you Adaptive Mobility's original Part 2: Take the Wheel - A Driver Education Course for Occupational Therapy.

Part 2: Take the Wheel is a 25 CEU, blended learning course, integrating an online module and 3 days of live face to face training.

Part 2: Take the Wheel is a hybrid learning event and our most popular workshop. The workshop includes viewing of an online course and attending a 3 day live workshop with experienced occupational therapy practitioners with a specialty in driving and community mobility. This workshop is the only workshop offered in the United States that provides real, in-car training with other specialists in driving

The workshop is geared toward the therapist who has little or no in-vehicle experience working with persons with special needs. Each person registering for this course must have foundational knowledge in the field of driver evaluation in order to participate fully in the dynamic learning experiences and must have completed Part 1: Building Blocks or a comparable course approved prior to registering.*

Each person registering for this course must have a valid driver's license and arrive prepared with closed toe shoes and attire compatible with work outside.

Part 2 Take the Wheel includes instruction on driver education terminology, principles and sequence; analysis of traffic environments and the task of driving; the purpose and process for the in-car phase of a driver evaluation; equipping a dual-controlled evaluation vehicle; and how to establish specific driving routes per client and disability. You will learn how to control the vehicle on the right side, how to use instructor equipment in the car and how to react to various driving behaviors.  You will learn how to verbally cue for directions, provide commentary driving and utilize safe techniques for observing and taking note of driving behavior. Instruction in driver education teaching methodologies will enhance the therapist’s skill in performing on-the-road evaluations and/or to provide training and instruction to clients.

A minimum of 15 hours of this workshop are spent in a real evaluation vehicle with our driver specialists to practice the verbal, visual, cognitive and physical skills needed by the therapist for controlling the vehicle and driver from the right front seat. At the end of the workshop, the participant will have a visceral understanding of the complexity of the driving task and how to assess a driver's performance skills on the road.

Upon the completion of Part 2: Take the Wheel, participants will be able to identify:

  • the steps for conducting an in-vehicle evaluation
  • component performance skills required for safe driving
  • basic driver education principles
  • driver education resource material
  • evaluation vehicle set up for the instructor
  • structure of the in-vehicle phase for assessment and/or training
  • observation skills necessary for an entry-level driver rehabilitation specialist
  • techniques for controlling a car from the right side
  • good visual skills and habits necessary to a driver rehabilitation specialist in-vehicle
  • the occupational therapy process used in the evaluation vehicle
  • driver education principles, terminology and task sequencing
  • importance of individualized driver education lessons for new drivers
  • beginning level proficiency for documentation of driving performance
  • beginning level proficiency of verbal skills of commentary driving, cuing, directions and instructions
  • how to plan driving routes based on goals for each individual client
